Hospital Information System Implementation

About the Project

The state of the art facility was an opened with a full range of patient services including, but not limited to Acute Care, Ambulatory Care, and Surgical Care.   To provide the health information systems used by over 300 staff,   the facility was provisioned with the following Hardware:

• 370 computers accessible to staff which included wall mounted devices, carts, laptops, tablets and desktops.
• 40 label printers
• 75 Laser printers

Coming up with an implementation model to work for over 120 applications and health information systems was a challenge; However, it was determined that the best model was to phase in the project in five (5) stages to eliminate as many risks as possible, these stages were:

Stage 1:  Requirements Planning and Analysis

Stage 2:  Implementing the core systems in a Test Environment

Stage 3:  Implementing the core systems in a Live Environment

Stage 4:  Training / Provisioning Users with Access

Stage 5:  Patient Move (Opening)

Business Analysis

Planning the requirements for the health information systems began in January 2006.    The impact of over 120 applications was carefully analyzed by a team of clinical and business analysts to determine the implementation and support requirements for each application.   Eliciting these requirements took many months to complete and included the feedback from almost every department in the hospital.   Looking back on the project, it’s widely accepted that this careful attention to the project requirements is what made the implementation of the health information systems a success
