Business Intelligence

You may have noticed that the amount of information your business collects and is expected to report is on the rise. It seems that people are no longer looking at just the bottom line, but are asking the question “how did you come up with that figure?”, more and more often. To further complicate matters, these questions come from a number of angles, forcing you to adjust your response. Sound like you? Don’t be surprised, this quandary is seen in all types of jobs. What becomes challenging is managing the effort to collect the information, ensure it’s accurate, and deliver it in an timely and concise format.

As an example, let’s presume you are an expert in your job and Joe asks you “how much will it cost to build this?” . From experience you know that it’s going to cost $10,000, so initially that’s what you tell Joe. A few day’s later Joe tells you he’d like to go ahead with the project but first he needs to know why it cost’s $10,000. You’re eager to get this project, but as luck would have it your wife just had a baby, you’re secretary is on vacation, and you have a looming deadline on a critical project. Joe’s requests takes to take a back-seat since you know it’s going to take a while to gather up the information he needs so to be comfortable moving forward with the project. Joe comes back a few day’s later looking for a response and unfortunately you cannot give him the information he needs. He then decides to postpone the project since the opportunity has passed. You’ve just lost a $10,000 project!

In this situation, If you had the tools to drill into the information you needed more quickly and easily, you may have had the time to answer Joe’s request on the spot and win the contract. These tools, in the IT world, are called business intelligence (BI) applications and are typically aligned with your business strategy to help you collect, analyze, and report both historical and real-time information about your business.
